Delegation led by Deputy Director USAID/Pakistan’s Office of Climate &
Sustainable Growth Mr Keith Metzner along with Economics Growth Specialist Mr Kamran
Niazi and Dr Mubasshra visited the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS)
Lahore called on Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmed. A meeting was held on Challenges &
Opportunities in Reducing Methane Emissions in Pakistani Livestock and Dairy Sector in City
Campus on Monday.
Prof Dr Nasim Ahmed chaired the meeting while Mr Keith Metzner know about development
initiatives to promote the dairy and livestock sector to mitigate the impact of climate change on
development in the province and he reviewed USAID’s future climate and sustainable growth
strategy in Pakistan.
Speaking on occasion, Prof Dr Nasim emphasized on the importance of climate change in south
Asia and its impact on the livestock production sustainability. He discussed the potential
collaborative and funding opportunities from different agencies to curb methane production from
different livestock production systems. At the end it was mutually agreed for future collaboration
on climate change.
Earlier, Chairman Department of Animal Nutrition Dr Naveed ul Haq gave detail presentation on
UVAS work on climate change. In which he spoke about challenges related to poor nutritional
strategies, heat stress season, housing and managemental practices, electric demand in urban
areas, water supply to livestock and livestock health management and reproduction facing in
Pakistan. He highlighted UVAS goals on climate change and UVAS state of the art facility for
conducting experiment on livestock. He also mentioned about livestock policy brief for the
profitability of poor farming community and national and international collaborative project on
climate change etc.
